Bulla Regia
Bulla Regia was an ancient city in the Roman province of Africa proconsularis (today Hammam Daradji in Tunisia , about 170 kilometers from Tunis ).
A settlement already existed in prehistoric times on the site of the later Bulla in the fertile Bagradas valley. It later belonged to the sphere of influence of the Carthaginians , who had to hand over Bulla to the Numidian king Massinissa shortly before the Third Punic War . The city probably served as the residence of the Numidian kings (Latin regius : "royal"). Since Caesar , Bulla belonged to the Roman province of Africa nova, later Africa proconsularis. First it had the status of a free city (oppidum liberum) , became a Municipium in the 1st century and was given the title of one under Hadriancolonia .
The remains of numerous buildings (including the forum , thermal baths , theater ) can still be seen. Numerous excavated houses have a special feature of a developed basement, which was used to protect against the summer heat.
Bulla Regia had a bishop in late antiquity . The diocese continues as the titular diocese Bulla Regia of the Roman Catholic Church .
