Eismeerstrasse

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Eismeerstraße ( Finnish: Jäämerentie, formerly also known as Petsamontie ) is a traffic connection in Finnish Lapland . It was originally completed in 1931 as a 531-kilometer connection from the Finnish provincial capital Rovaniemi via Sodankylä and Ivalo to the Arctic Ocean port Liinahamari in Petsamo . After Finland had to cede Petsamo to the Soviet Union as a result of the lost Continuation War in 1944, Finland lost access to the Arctic Ocean and with it the northern part of the Arctic Strait. The section of State Road 4 between Rovaniemi and Ivalo is still known as the Ice Sea Road.

The Arctic Strait and the port of Liinahamari were of particular importance to Finland and Sweden during the Second World War in 1940–1941, as they were not controlled by the German Empire or the Soviet Union.
