The Gulf of Tunis ( Arabic خليج تونس khalīj Tūnis ) is a large gulf (sea bay ) of the Mediterranean Sea in northeastern Tunisia . Tunisia's capital, Tunis, is located on the southwestern bank of the Gulf south of Cape Carthage. In the northeast of Tunis are the ruins of Carthage , today a district of the capital. The gulf isdelimitedin the north-west by Cape Farina (Ras et Tarf) with the large lagoon of Garh el Melhlying below it to the south, and in the north-east by Cape Bon (Rass Eddar) against the Mediterranean Sea.
