Beja ( French Béja ; Arabic باجة Bādscha , DMG Bāǧa ) is a city in northern Tunisia with about 106,441 inhabitants. It is located around 100 km west of Tunis and is the capital of the Beja governorate named after it.
Located in a region with good agricultural cultivation conditions, Beja was an important trading post even in ancient times . The city was fortified for the first time under Carthaginian rule . After the conquest by the Romans , who called the region the "Golden Land", new fortifications were built, the remains of which are still preserved today.
Even today the city plays an important role in Tunisia's food production. The German company Kromberg & Schubert has a location in Beja.
Since 1993 there has been a friendship with the Portuguese city of Beja .
