Bechar ( Arabic بشار Beschār , DMG Baššār , tamazight ⴱⴻⵛⵛⴰⵔ Beccar ; also Béchar or Colomb-Bechar ) is an Algerian city and capital of the province of the same name .

Bechar is located 60 kilometers from the Moroccan border and at the foot of the western Great Erg on sand hills such as Mizeb el Atchane and Gadet Sedra at an altitude of 789 meters.

Air traffic
Six kilometers from the city center of Bechar is " Bechar Airport " with the IATA airport code CBH and the ICAO code DAOR . It has two runways of 3000 and 3700 m in length.
railroad
Bechar was a railway junction of the meter -gauge railway from Mohammadia with the former standard-gauge Mediterranean-Niger Railway , both of which continued to Kanadsa. The former carried passenger traffic until 1985 and freight trains irregularly until 1991. After a freight train derailed at Bou Ktoub in July 1991 due to poor line maintenance, freight traffic was also stopped. Empty freight wagons were still being driven to Mohammadia until 1996. The branch lines around Colomb Béchar were closed between 1965 and 1967.
The Mohammadia - Colomb Béchar railway line is still completely in place. Although three level crossings were covered with asphalt in 2007, some Andrew's crosses between Tizi and Mohammadia were repainted.
Rocket launch site
From 1952 to 1967 the French rocket launch site Center interarmées d'essais d'engins spéciaux was located near Bechar . The city was the starting point of the Croisière Noire , André Citroën's trans-Africa expedition . It led via Timbuktu in Mali to Antananarivo (Tananarive) in Madagascar with eight half-track vehicles . Georges-Marie Haardt and his deputy Louis Audouin-Dubreuil led this undertaking from October 28, 1924 to August 1, 1925.
With the club JS Saoura , which is represented in the first Algerian soccer league , the city is the southernmost professional sports club in the country.
