The CAF Champions League 2019/20 (also called Total CAF Champions League 2019/20 for sponsorship reasons ) is the 24th season of the most important African competition for club teams in football under this name. The season began with the preliminary round on August 9, 2019 and should end with the final on May 29, 2020.
The draw took place on July 21, 2019. The first legs were played on September 14 and 15, the second legs on September 27-29 and October 24, 2019. The losing teams played on in the play-off round of the CAF Confederation Cup .
The group draw took place on October 9, 2019. The 16 winners of the first round were divided into four lottery pots and drawn into four groups of four teams each. The teams were seeded according to their results in the CAF competitions of the last five seasons ( CAF five-year ranking ). The group winners and runners-up qualified for the quarter-finals, while those placed third and fourth were eliminated from the competition.
If two or more teams were tied, the placement was determined by the following criteria:
Number of points in direct comparison
Goal difference in direct comparison
Number of goals in direct comparison
Number of away goals in direct comparison
If, after applying criteria 1 to 4, there are still several teams in the same place in the table, criteria 1 to 4 are reapplied, but only to the matches between the teams in question. Should this also not lead to a definitive placement, criteria 6 to 9 will be applied.
The draw took place on February 5, 2020. A group runner-up each met a group winner from another group, with the group winners initially playing the first leg away. The first legs were played on February 28 and 29, the second legs on March 6 and 7, 2020.
The first legs were originally supposed to be played on May 1 and 2, the second legs on May 8 and 9, 2020, but the dates of the matches have been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
