The Loftus Versfeld Stadium is a rugby and football stadium in the South African capital Pretoria , Tshwane municipality , Gauteng province . It has a capacity of 51,762 and was last completely modernized in 2008. At the 2010 soccer World Cup , however, there were only 42,858 mostly uncovered seats.
history
The site of today's stadium has been used as a sports field since 1903. The first stadium-like facility was built from concrete in 1923 . At that time, the stadium only held 2,000 spectators. From 1948 the stadium was expanded several times.
The stadium is home to the South African rugby union teams Bulls in Super Rugby and Blue Bulls in Currie Cup . The two football clubs Supersport United and Mamelodi Sundowns use the Loftus Versfeld Stadium and the Atteridgeville Super Stadium part-time. Some games of the 1995 Rugby Union World Cup were also held there.
Next was ahead of the football World Cup of Confederations Cup 2009 played in the stadium. In 2010, five first-round games and one second-round game of the World Cup were played here.
In addition to sporting events, concerts are held in the stadium.
The name of the stadium goes back to Robert Owen Loftus Versfeld, who is considered the founder of organized sport in Pretoria.
