history
Rugby Park Stadium is on the corner of Elles Road and Tweed Street in Invercargill. Today it has a capacity of 17,000 spectators, with 5,000 seats in the stadium. Before the expansion with seats, which took place in several steps, it could hold up to 30,000 visitors in the 1960s. The stadium was built on the site of the former Invercargill rugby stadium, Homestead Stadium . In 2000, the city announced that it would replace the stadium with support from the ILT and the Community Trust of Southland . In 2002 the new venue was inaugurated.
The Highlanders in Dunedin occasionally play in the Rugby Park and attract many viewers. The soccer team Southland Spirit FC also plays in this stadium. The arena is also used for events.
In 2011, two matches of the Rugby Union World Cup will take place in the stadium.
