The Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg , the largest city in South Africa , was built in 1959 and opened on May 22 of the same year. The stadium is located in Soweto , an original black settlement, then at the gates of Johannesburg. A few kilometers away is the largest football stadium in Africa, Soccer City . The Orlando Pirates club has played its home games at the Orlando Stadium since the stadium was inaugurated in 1959. The club, founded in 1937, has been five times football champions of South Africa and won the national cup twice . The Orlando Pirates' greatest international success is their victory in the CAF Champions League in 1995.

The Orlando Stadium in Soweto now holds 40,000 spectators. When it opened in 1959, it could accommodate 24,000 people. Over the years, the stadium's capacity has increased to almost 60,000 seats. After a renovation in 2008, the capacity decreased to 40,000 seats. During the Soccer World Cup 2010 , which South Africa was the first African country to host, the Orlando Stadium served as a training stadium for various national teams. In addition, it was intended as a temporary stadium in case one of the venues should not be ready in time. The opening concert of the Soccer World Cup also took place in this stadium, at which internationally known artists such as Shakira played with their FIFA World Cup song Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) , K'naan or the Black Eyed Peas . A second major event took place at Orlando Stadium with the 2010 Super 14 season. This rugby union tournament played a semi-final game and a final at the Orlando Pirates' stadium.
