Bogdan Wojdowski
Bogdan Wojdowski (born November 30, 1930 in Warsaw ; died April 21, 1994 there ) was a Polish writer.
Life
Dawid Wojdowski's family was imprisoned in the Warsaw ghetto and he attended an underground school. He survived the German persecution of the Jews and Polonized his first name. He attended the agricultural school in Lubartów and the technical vocational school in Lublin and Karpacz . He then studied Polish Studies at the University of Warsaw and graduated in 1954.
Wojdowski was a reporter for Wieś magazine from 1951 . From 1954 he wrote articles for the literary magazine Przegląd Kulturalny (cultural overview) and after it was discontinued he was editor for theater and film at the fortnightly magazine Współczesność until 1965 . For a short time he was a primary school teacher in Olsztyn in 1957/58 . He became a member of the Polish Writers' Union (ZLP).
The novel Bread for the Dead , published in 1971, describes the time of the Warsaw Ghetto between 1940 and 1942 from the perspective of a twelve-year-old boy. The novel was published in German translation in the GDR in 1974. Despite the tips from Hanna Krall and Henryk Grynberg , no German publisher could be found in the West.
Wojdowski received the Kościelski Prize in 1964 .
