Lubartów [ luˈbartuf ] is a city in Poland in the Lublin Voivodeship about 30 km north of Lublin on the Wieprz River .
history
On May 29, 1543 the voivode Piotr Firlej received from the Polish King Sigismund I the right to found a city under Magdeburg law on the site of today's Lubartów . At this point there were already two small settlements on the site. The city was named Lewartów . On September 21, 1575, all settlers were assured that they would freely practice their religion . The first guilds were founded in 1580 . In the course of the 16th century, numerous Jews settled and founded their own religious community in 1592. During the war with the Swedes , the place was badly damaged and looted. In 1733 construction began on the Church of St. Anne. On November 22, 1744, August III confirmed . the city law . The place was given its current name Lubartów , and Lewartów was renamed Lubartów . During the First World War , the armies of the Central Powers and Russia met at Lubartów in the summer of 1915 . The city itself was spared major damage. During the Second World War , the Germans established the Lubartów Ghetto . The Red Army reached the city on July 22, 1944 and liberated it from the National Socialists .
