Dimitris Sioufas

Dimitris Sioufas ( Greek Δημήτρης Σιούφας , born August 15, 1944 in Ellinopyrgos , Karditsa ; † January 11, 2019 ) was a Greek lawyer and politician of the conservative party New Democracy (Nea Dimokratia) . He held several ministerial posts and was most recently President of Parliament from 2007 to 2009.

Life

Sioufas holds a degree in Political Science and Public Administration from the Pantion University of Athens and a law degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki .

He was first elected to the Greek Parliament in 1981 and was re-elected in all subsequent elections. He was Minister of Social Affairs from August 1991 to December 1992 and Minister of Health from December 1992 to October 1993. After the parliamentary election of 2004 , which was won by the New Democracy Party, Sioufas became Minister for Development on March 10, 2004 in the government of Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis . He gave up this position on September 19, 2007 when he was appointed Speaker of Parliament. He held this office until the election in October 2009 , in which his party lost the majority.

Sioufas had been a member of the Central Committee of the New Democracy Party since 1997, before that from 1979 to 1985 and from 1994 to 1997. He also became a member of the Executive Committee from 1997 to 2001 and a member of the Political Council from 2001 to March 2004. From April 2000 until March 2004 he was general secretary of his party's parliamentary group.

Sioufas was married to Kaity Anagnostaki and had two sons and a daughter.
