Georgios Souflias ( Greek Γεώργιος Σουφλιάς , born July 7, 1941 in Agia Triada Farsalon near Larisa ) is a Greek politician . He held ministerial posts in various conservative governments from 1989 to 2009.
Souflias comes from the Sarakatsans . He graduated from the National Technical University of Athens with an engineering degree . From 1966 to 1974 he worked as an engineer in Larisa. In the parliamentary elections in 1974 he was elected for the first time as a member of the conservative Nea Dimokratia in the Greek parliament . From November 1977 to May 1980 he was State Secretary in the Ministry of the Interior, then until September 1981 in the Ministry of Coordination.
In the governments of Tzannis Tzannetakis , Xenophon Zolotas and Konstantinos Mitsotakis he held the following ministerial offices :
Minister of Economic Affairs July 1989 - October 1989 and April 1990 - October 1990
Finance Minister November 1989 - February 1990
Minister of Tourism April 1990 - May 1990
Minister of Education and Religion January 1991 - October 1993
In 1997 Souflias ran for chairmanship of the Nea Dimokratia , but was defeated by Kostas Karamanlis . In February 1998 he and two other MPs were expelled from the party because he had not voted according to the party line. He did not run for this in the parliamentary elections in 2000. At a public invitation from Kostas Karamanlis, he rejoined the party in April 2001 and headed the political planning office of Nea Dimokratia, which was then in the opposition.
In the parliamentary elections in Greece in 2004 he was re-elected as a member of the New Democracy. In the government of Kostas Karamanlis from 2004 to 2009, Souflias was Minister for the Environment, Spatial Planning and Public Works. In the early parliamentary elections in 2009 , in which his party lost the government majority, he was re-elected, but withdrew from all political offices after he was held responsible for the defeat for advising Kostas Karamanlis to go to the early elections.
