Michalis Papakonstantinou
Michalis Papakonstantinou ( Greek Μιχάλης Παπακωνσταντίνου , born November 1, 1919 in Kozani ; † January 17, 2010 ) was a Greek politician. He held several ministerial posts under Prime Minister Konstantinos Mitsotakis . In 1992/93 he was Greek Foreign Minister.
Papakonstantinou studied law at the University of Thessaloniki and international law at the universities of Manchester , Cambridge and Heidelberg .
In 1961 he was first elected to the Greek Parliament for the Center Union. In 1964, Prime Minister Georgios Papandreou served as State Secretary in the Ministry of Defense.
In 1973, during the military dictatorship , he was placed under some sort of house arrest when the junta warned his wife that he would be arrested if he "walked around and chatted". After the end of the dictatorship he ran unsuccessfully for the Center Union - New Forces , of which he was secretary. In 1978 he joined the Nea Dimokratia and was elected as a member of the parliamentary elections in 1981 .
He was Minister of Industry in the Tzannetakis government (1989). Under Prime Minister Konstantinos Mitsotakis he was Minister for Agriculture (1990–1991), Justice (1991–1992) and Foreign Minister (1992–1993).
At the end of 1993 he fell out with the chairman of the Nea Dimokratia, Miltiadis Evert , when he criticized his nationalistic handling of the " Macedonia question ". He was expelled from the party by the disciplinary committee of the Nea Dimokratia and remained an independent MP.
In October 1995 he was awarded the Abdi İpekçi Prize for Greek-Turkish friendship.
Papakonstantinou was the uncle of the current Environment Minister and former Minister of Finance (2009-2011) Giorgos Papakonstantinou .
Papakonstantinou is a regular contributor to Athens and Thessaloniki newspapers and foreign magazines and is the author of legal, historical and political books in Greek and English.
