Abdi İpekçi Prize

The Abdi İpekçi Prize ( Turkish Abdi İpekçi Dostluk ve Barış Ödülü ; Greek Ειδικό Βραβείο Ειρήνης και Φιλίας Αμπντί Ιπεκτσί ; English Abdi Ipekci Friendship and Peace Prize or Abdi Ipekci Award ) is a price to individuals or non-governmental organizations will be awarded, which to promote friendship between Turkey and Greece in the fields of art, literature or music . The award is named after the journalist Abdi İpekçi . The prize is awarded every two years, alternately in Athens and Istanbul .

history

1979 İpekçi campaigned for a collaboration between Greek and Turkish journalists. A little later, Abdi İpekçi was assassinated by supporters of the Gray Wolves . The engineer Andreas Politakis then suggested to the editor of the newspaper Eleftherotypia that a competition be held to award the article that would best deal with the Greek-Turkish relations. After the competition was over, the Athens correspondent wrote about the competition for Milliyet newspaper and the award-winning article was published. In 1981 the award ceremony was held in Athens in the presence of the widow of the murdered Abdi İpekçi. The award ceremony has been under the auspices of the United Nations since 1986 .
