Giorgos Papakonstantinou ( Greek Γιώργος Παπακωνσταντίνου , born October 30, 1961 in Athens ) is a Greek economist and politician. From October 2009 he held the position of finance minister in the government of Prime Minister Giorgos Papandreou, which was important in view of the Greek financial crisis . From June 17, 2011 to May 17, 2012 he was Environment Minister, first in the Papandreou cabinet ( PASOK ) and from November 11, 2011 in the cabinet of Prime Minister Loukas Papadimos .

Life

Papakonstantinou studied economics at New York University and the London School of Economics , where he also received his doctorate. After completing his studies, he worked for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development ( OECD ) in Paris for 10 years . There he dealt with topics of industry and problems of new technologies and wrote studies on the economic policies of the member countries of the OECD and Greece.

After returning to Greece, he was an advisor to Prime Minister Konstantinos Simitis (who was then head of the Simitis II cabinet ) and worked for the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance from 1998–2000 . He also represented Greece at the EU Economic Policy Committee, was a member of the 'Council of Wise Men' of the Ministry of Finance and coordinator for the drafting of a “Convergence Charter” for the Greek economy.

During the Greek Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2003, he was the coordinator of the “ Lisbon Process ”, which was supposed to promote economic and social reforms in the EU.

From 2001 to 2007 he taught as visiting professor at the Faculty of Management at Athens University of Economics and Business . In 2004 he was economic advisor to the chairman of the then opposition PASOK , Giorgos Papandreou.

In the parliamentary elections in September 2007 he became a member of the PASOK parliament for the prefecture of Kozani .

In the European elections in Greece in 2009 , he won a seat in the European Parliament . After PASOK won the parliamentary elections on October 4, 2009 , he gave up this mandate because the new Prime Minister Papandreou appointed him to his cabinet as finance minister . After mass protests over the government's austerity measures, Papandreou withdrew him on June 17, 2011 from this key department (which is important for overcoming the country's financial crisis) and appointed him environment minister. In 2012 Papakonstantinou was expelled from PASOK.

On July 15, 2013, the Greek parliament lifted Papakonstantinous' immunity to allow charges of forgery and other offenses to be brought before a special court. Papakonstantinou was accused of deleting the names of three relatives from the so-called Lagarde list during his time as finance minister in 2010 . He denied the allegations and described himself as a victim of a smear campaign. The trial before the special court resulted in a guilty verdict and a one-year prison sentence, which was suspended.
