Tina Birbili ( Greek Τίνα Μπιρμπίλη , * 1969 in Athens ) is a Greek environmental scientist and politician ( PASOK ). From October 7, 2009 to June 17, 2011 she was Minister for Environment, Energy and Climate Change in the government of Giorgos Andrea Papandreou .

Life

She studied physics at the University of Athens and earned a master's degree in environmental technology from Imperial College London before completing her doctorate in physics. She coordinated and managed European Union projects in the field of environment and sustainable development. She is co-author of a book Building Cities for Cyclists .

She worked in the city administration of Athens under Mayor Dimitris Avramopoulos . In recent years, however, she was one of the closest collaborators of Giorgos Andrea Papandreou , who appointed the relatively unknown politician to head the newly created environment ministry as the youngest member of his cabinet after her victory in the 2009 parliamentary elections .

In the course of a cabinet reshuffle in June 2011, Birbili left the cabinet. She had opposed the plans to reorganize the state budget, in particular the planned privatization of the electricity company DEI and the plan to legalize the numerous illegal buildings against payment of fines.

Tina Birbili is a single mother of one son.
