Christos Papoutsis ( Greek Χρήστος Παπουτσής , born April 11, 1953 in Larisa , Greece ) is a Greek economist and politician .
Life
In 1977 he became a member of the Central Committee of PASOK and a member of the executive office and international secretary of the party.
From 1981 to 1984 he was special advisor to the government on questions of public administration, then until 1994 a member of the European Parliament, head of the PASOK delegation and member of the budget, foreign affairs and security and defense committees. 1984–1989 he was also deputy chairman of the interparliamentary delegation EEC - Canada and from 1987 to 1994 deputy group chairman of the SPE and from 1988 to 1994 its executive committee. From 1984 to 1994 he was a member of the EEC- USA interparliamentary commission .
From 1995 to 1999 he was European Commissioner for Energy , Euratom , Medium and Small Enterprises and Tourism in the Santer Commission .
He was then elected to the Greek Parliament in April 2000 , to which he has been a member since then. His candidacy for mayor of Athens in the local elections in October 2002 was unsuccessful.
From April 14, 2000 to October 24, 2001 he was the Greek Minister for the Merchant Navy and from September 2010 Minister for the Protection of Citizens (Public Security). On New Year's Day 2011, he spoke about Greek plans for a border fence against the refugee movements from European Turkey. On February 27, 2012, Papoutsis resigned from his ministerial office to run for PASOK party leadership. The candidacy was unsuccessful.
In July 2013 it was announced that Papoutsis would represent Greece at the World Bank .
