António Cardoso e Cunha

António José Cardoso e Cunha (born January 28, 1933 in Leiria ) is a former Portuguese politician of the PSD and EC commissioner.

biography

Antonio Cardoso graduated as a chemical engineer.

For several legislative terms he belonged to the Assembleia da República . He was State Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economics and from January 3, 1980 to September 4, 1981 Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries (Ministro da Agricultura e Pescas) in the cabinets of Prime Ministers Francisco Sá Carneiro , Diogo Freitas do Amaral and Francisco Pinto Balsemão .

After Portugal joined the European Community , on January 6, 1986, he was first Commissioner for Fisheries . From 1989 to 1993 he was the Commissioner for Energy of the European Commission to. During his tenure as energy commissioner, he tried to dissolve the monopoly of gas and electricity companies. However, these plans were rejected by the electricity industry.

After that he was the first commissioner of the Expo 98 in Lisbon until 1997 . He then became Chairman of the Board of Directors of the airline TAP Portugal . He resigned from this position in August 2004.
