Carlo Ripa di Meana (born August 15, 1929 in Pietrasanta , † March 2, 2018 in Rome ) was an Italian politician .

He came from an aristocratic Roman family. His maternal grandfather was the Senator and Minister Carlo Schanzer . Initially, Ripa di Meana was a member of the Communist Party . After he was expelled from this party in 1958, he joined the Socialist Party .

From 1979 to 1984 he represented the socialists in the European Parliament . In 1985 he was sent to the European Commission by the Italian government . In the Delors I Commission from 1985 to 1989 he was Commissioner for Institutional Reforms , Information Policy and for Culture and Tourism . In the Delors II Commission (1989 to 1992) he was responsible for the environment, nuclear safety and civil protection. From 1992 to 1993 he was Italy's Environment Minister under Giuliano Amato . In 1992 he left PSI. In 1994 he was re-elected to the European Parliament for the Federazione dei Verdi (FdV; Greens), from which he resigned at the end of the 1999 legislative period. In July 1998 he moved from the FdV to Sinistra Verde (Green Left) and at the same time from the Green Group in the European Parliament to the United European Left / Nordic Green Left (GUE / NGL).

Carlo Ripa di Meana married the television personality and fashion designer Marina Lante Della Rovere (née Punturieri) in 1982 . The witnesses were Alberto Moravia , Goffredo Parise , Bettino Craxi and Antonio Giolitti .
