Ritt Bjerregaard (born May 19, 1941 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish social democratic politician . She was Minister several times, EU Commissioner for four years and Mayor of Copenhagen from 2006 to January 1, 2010.

Life

Ritt Bjerregaard grew up in the working class district of Vesterbro in Copenhagen. The father was a carpenter, the mother an accountant. After graduating from high school in 1958, she studied at a teacher training college. After passing the state examination for teaching, she worked as a teacher for several years. She was politically active early on. She was married to Søren Mørch , historian, in 1966 and has lived in Odense ever since . In her free time, she works in the private organic garden , where she particularly cultivates apple and fruit . She also writes autobiographical literature related to experiences and non-fiction, and has published several books of her own.

Public offices

  • Ritt Bjerrgaard's political career began in 1970 when he became a member of Odense City Council.
  • Bjerregaard was a member of the Danish Parliament from September 21, 1971 to January 22, 1995 and again from November 20, 2001.
  • She was Danish Minister of Education from September 27 to December 19, 1973 and again from February 13, 1975 to December 22, 1978, as well as Minister of Social Affairs from October 26, 1979 to December 30, 1981 and Minister of Food from February 23, 2000 to November 27, 2001.
  • Ritt Bjerregaard was EU Commissioner for Environment and Nuclear Safety in the Santer Commission from 1995 to 1999.
  • Bjerregaard won the direct election for the mayor's office in the Danish capital Copenhagen on November 16, 2005. In the local elections in November 2009, she was not re-elected.

The affairs

Ritt Bjerregaard has made the media spotlight several times:

  • When, as Minister, she had a ferry on the Great Belt recalled in 1977 because it was too late for departure.
  • When, in 1978, during a UNESCO conference in Paris, she was quartered in a suite in the luxury Hotel Ritz and spent 60,000 tax crowns (then 15,000 DM). This so-called Ritz affair cost her the post of Minister of Education.
  • When it was found out in 1994 that she was running a large apartment in Copenhagen while at the same time receiving a tax-free allowance for MPs living outside of Copenhagen.
  • When she wrote a book in 1999 about her time as EU Commissioner, which included very crude characteristics of her fellow Commissioners. The book had to be recalled, but was printed, with or without their knowledge and consent, by the Copenhagen daily Politiken as a supplement to the newspaper.
  • When, in 2005, as the newly elected mayor of Copenhagen, she had new office furniture purchased for her own office for 1 million crowns (130,000 euros).

It should be emphasized, however, that the affairs never led to police investigations or criminal proceedings. Ritt Bjerregaard has always expressed the opinion that the allegations against her were on the whole unjustified.

It is said again and again that Ritt Bjerregaard is said to have said in the 1970s in connection with the implementation of a new elementary school law: "What not everyone can learn, nobody should learn". She denies this statement and its authenticity has never been proven with certainty. The fact that she campaigned for an egalitarian school policy can hardly be denied.

When she ran for the post of mayor in Copenhagen, she is said to have promised to have 5000 apartments built within 5 years at a monthly rent of no more than 5000 kroner. When she left office, 14 of these so-called non-profit apartments had been built. Ritt Bjerregaard denies that it was a promise, only in her opinion she expressed a future perspective.
