Dimitris P. Droutsas ( Greek Δημήτρης Π. Δρούτσας , born August 5, 1968 in Nicosia , Cyprus ) is a Greek politician ( PASOK ) and has been a member of the European Parliament since June 22, 2011 . Previously, he was Foreign Minister of Greece from September 7, 2010 to June 17, 2011.

Life

He is the son of a Greek and a German . In Vienna he attended the public grammar school of the Theresian Academy Foundation , where he graduated in 1985 . He then completed his law studies at the University of Vienna , which he graduated as Mag. Iur. completed. He later became a university assistant at the Research Institute for European Issues at the Vienna University of Economics and Business , with a focus on European law. He then worked as legal advisor to Wolfgang Schüssel at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vienna . From there in 1999, poached by Giorgos Andrea Papandreou , he joined the socialist party PASOK . He advised Foreign Minister Papandreou in particular on the integration of Cyprus into the European Union, the Cyprus question, the policy of rapprochement between Greece and Turkey and important questions of the European institutions.

After the socialists left the government, he became international secretary of PASOK in 2004, and then cabinet director to the new party leader Papandreou.

After Papandreou won the parliamentary elections in October 2009 , Papandreou himself initially took over the Foreign Ministry and appointed Droutsas as Deputy Foreign Minister. During the cabinet reshuffle on September 7, 2010, he was appointed Foreign Minister , who had previously largely taken over the day-to-day business of foreign policy for the Prime Minister , who was so busy dealing with the Greek financial crisis . After another cabinet reshuffle, Droutsas left the Greek government on June 17, 2011 and was replaced by Stavros Lambrinidis . Since Lambrinidis had to resign his mandate in the European Parliament , a seat was vacated there, which Droutsas took over as a successor. He's there, like all PASOK deputies, member of the Social Democratic faction Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats .

Droutsas is fluent in German and Greek, as well as French, English and Russian; he is married to the journalist Faye Karaviti.
