Katerina Batzeli ( Greek Κατερίνα Μπατζελή , also Ekaterina Batzeli (Αικατερίνη Μπατζελή), born May 25, 1958 in Athens ) is a Greek politician ( PASOK ). She was Minister of Agricultural Development and Food from October 7, 2009 to September 7, 2010.

Life

After studying economics at the University of Athens (1976–81) and the University of Brussels (1982–83), Batzeli worked until 1989 as an employee of the Social Democratic Group in the European Parliament . From 1989 to 1993 she was a member of the cabinet of Vasso Papandreou , who at that time was EC Commissioner for Social Affairs .

In 1994 Batzeli switched to national politics and became Secretary General for European and International Affairs at the Greek Ministry of Agriculture. In addition, she took over party offices in the Greek socialist party PASOK .

From 1996 to 2004 she worked, among other things, for the European farmers' association COPA , whose “Olive Oil” working group she led.

In the 2004 European elections , she was elected to the European Parliament , where she was spokeswoman for the Socialist Group in the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development from 2004 to 2007 . She then took over the chairmanship of the Committee on Culture and Education and since then has only been a deputy member of the Committee on Agriculture and the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs .

In the parliamentary elections in Greece in 2009 , Batzeli was elected to the Greek parliament . Prime Minister Giorgos Andrea Papandreou appointed her to his government as Minister of Agriculture on October 7, 2009. In the cabinet reshuffle on September 7, 2010, she resigned from the government.
