Stavros Lambrinidis ( Greek Σταύρος Λαμπρινίδης , born February 6, 1962 in Athens ) is a Greek politician of the social democratic party PASOK . He was Greece's Foreign Minister from June 17 to November 11, 2011. He has been the EU's special envoy for human rights since July 25, 2012 .

Life

Stavros Lambrinidis graduated from Amherst College with a bachelor's degree in political science and finance in 1984 . He then received his doctorate in law from Yale Law School in 1988 and worked for Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering in Washington, DC from 1988 to 1993. In 1988, he was editor-in-chief of the legal journal The Yale Journal of International Law . In 1990 he was chairman of the human rights committee for the Washington Bar Association.

From 1994 Lambrinidis was special advisor to the Greek State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, and later also to the Minister of Education Giorgos Papandreou . In 1996 he was temporarily head of the staff of Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos and in the same year General Secretary for Greeks Abroad in the Foreign Ministry. He held this office until 1999, during which time he was also a member of the PASOK Committee for Greeks Abroad .

From 1999 to 2004 Lambrinidis held the title of Special Envoy for Greece and from 2000 to 2004 he was Director General of the International Center for the Olympic Ceasefire , an organ of the International Olympic Committee , during the preparation period for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games . Lambrinidis also practiced from 1998 to 2004 various visiting professorships at the International Olympic Academy , the Diplomatic Academy of Greece and the Greek Police Academy.

In the 2004 European elections , Lambrinidis won a seat in the European Parliament for PASOK . Here he joined the social democratic group and was deputy chairman of the committee on civil liberties, justice and home affairs . In the European elections in Greece in 2009 , Lambrinidis ran for third place on the PASOK list and entered parliament again. Here he has now been appointed one of the fourteen Vice-Presidents of Parliament . He is also Vice President of the Party of European Socialists .

As a member of the European Parliament , Lambrinidis campaigned, among other things, for more data protection on the Internet and criticized the anti-piracy agreement ACTA , which could indirectly enable Internet blocking.

In June 2011, Lambrinidis was appointed Greek Foreign Minister in a cabinet reshuffle. He replaced Dimitris Droutsas , who in turn took over Lambrinidis' seat in the European Parliament. After the resignation of Prime Minister Giorgos Andrea Papandreou and the formation of a new government under Loukas Papadimos , Stavros Dimas succeeded him as Foreign Minister.

Lambrinidis has been the EU's special envoy for human rights since July 25, 2012 . He is the first special adviser who is not responsible for a region but for a subject area.

Awards

Stavros Lambrinidis was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Institute of Humanistic Studies of the Donetsk National University in 1999 .
