The International Olympic Academy ( IOA ) in Athens is the core of the Olympic education of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In 1938 the idea of such an institution was born on the occasion of the burial of Pierre de Coubertin's heart in a stele in Olympia . Carl Diem and the Greek IOC member Ioannis Ketseaspursued the idea even after the world war. In 1947 they presented the plans to the IOC, which took the IOA into its custody as an institution of the Greek Olympic Committee in 1949. In 1961 the 1st IOA took place as a summer school in a tent camp in Olympia. The languages of instruction are English and French. The participants come from more than fifty countries, the speakers are proven in Olympic studies. The permanent speakers from Germany included a. Wilhelm Henze (sports scientist) , Horst Ueberhorst and Norbert Müller (sports historian). In 1967 the first permanent buildings were erected. The library now contains more than 16,000 bibliographic units. From 1970 the activities increased, so that now no longer only courses for athletic students from all over the world, but also for officials, university lecturers, sports journalists, etc. are carried out. In 1994 additional permanent buildings were built with IOC funds, but they were badly damaged by a forest fire in 2009. In 2003 the IOA became its own legal entity. In 2009, the cooperation with the University of the Peloponnese was intensified and the IOA expanded into a Master of Arts in Olympic Studies supported by the European Union , in which the Cologne Sports University is also involved. The IOA publishes a series of papers given at the IOA.
