Georg Wilhelm Ernst August Friedrich Axel Prince of Hanover, Duke of Braunschweig and Lüneburg (born March 25, 1915 in Braunschweig , † January 8, 2006 in Munich ) was a grandson of Wilhelm II and brother-in-law of Philip, Duke of Edinburgh .

Georg Wilhelm came as the second of five children of the last Duke Ernst August III, who ruled between 1913 and 1918 . von Braunschweig and Lüneburg (1887–1953) and the only daughter of the last German Emperor Wilhelm II , Princess Viktoria Luise of Prussia (1892–1980).

Life

From 1930 to 1934 he attended the elite boarding school Schloss Salem near Überlingen on Lake Constance , which his uncle, the last German Chancellor in World War I, Max von Baden, had founded together with the teacher Kurt Hahn .

The horse lover Georg Wilhelm, who had been a member of the German military team before the Second World War , later set up the riding academy in Munich-Riem. He was a member of the International Olympic Committee ( IOC ) and the National Olympic Committee ( NOK ).

From 1948 to 1959 Georg Wilhelm directed the Schloss Salem school.

In April 1946, Georg married Wilhelm Sophie of Greece (1914-2001), daughter of Andreas of Greece and his wife Alice von Battenberg and sister of Philip, Duke of Edinburgh . Sophie had been married to Prince Christoph von Hessen , who had died in World War II , in her first marriage since 1930 .

The following children emerged from Georg Wilhelm's marriage with Sophie:
