The 2009 European elections in Greece took place on Sunday 7 June 2009. It was carried out in the course of the EU- wide European elections in 2009 , with 22 of the 736 seats in the European Parliament in Greece .

The election winner was the social democratic PASOK with 36.7%, followed by the conservative Nea Dimokratia (ND) with 32.3%.

Parties

In the elections, 27 parties and lists took part with a uniform ballot in all electoral districts.

The first Senate of the Supreme Court of Justice (Areopagus) recognized on May 24th the parties and list connections that met the legal requirements for participation in elections to the European Parliament. Of the parties and lists that had applied for admission to the European elections, Areopagus did not allow seven parties ( Democrats , Party of Responsible Citizens , Peasants and Workers Movement of Greece (PA.EKE) , Alternative Ecologists , Party of the Uprising of Pensioners in Greece , Political Greek-European animal protection movement , ecological animal rights activists of Greece ), while a party connection ( SYRIZA ) the participation of seven parties was not allowed ( DIKKI , Active Citizens Movement , Movement for the Unity of Action of the Left , Rot , Xekinima , Eco-Socialists Greece , ROZA group ).

Electoral system in Greece

In Greece there is purely proportional representation based on lists . The seats are distributed among all parties or lists in proportion to the total number of votes in the whole country. According to a 3 percent threshold , only those lists get seats that account for more than 3% of the valid votes.

As in most member states, the number of MEPs to be sent decreased, in Greece from 24 to 22.

voter turnout

The proportion of non-voters rose to 47.4% in the 2009 elections. The participation of Greek residents from other countries of the European Union in the elections also decreased (25,888 voters out of 36,413 at local embassies and consulates voted).
