Athanasios Plevris

Athanasios Plevris or Thanos Plevris ( Greek Αθανάσιος Πλεύρης ; * May 21, 1977 ) is a Greek lawyer and politician of the liberal-conservative Nea Dimokratia .

Plevris is the son of the Holocaust denier and anti-Semitic representative of the extreme right Kostas Plevris . Athanasios Plevris publicly distanced himself from his father's political views, but defended him as a lawyer against accusations of sedition and, after his acquittal, extolled the “freedom of opinion that applies in Greece”.

Plevris studied law at the University of Athens and received a PhD in criminal law. He completed postgraduate studies in medical law at Heidelberg University . During his stay there in 2002 he was chairman of the Association of Greek and Cypriot Students.

Plevris was elected to the LAOS party in the 2007 general election. In the European elections in 2009 he was elected to the European Parliament as one of two LAOS members : as a member of the Europe -critical group Europe of Freedom and Democracy (EFD), he was only a member of this parliament for a few months: in the early elections on October 4, 2009 he was re-elected to the Greek national parliament.

As a member of the Greek Parliament, Plevris campaigned for a bill that would give the Greeks abroad the right to vote.

In a question to the Minister of Justice, he expressed his indignation at the blunt mention of the name Macedonia on the cards of the Ouranio Toxo party ( Rainbow , Slav-Macedonian minority party) and Helsinki Watch . His question as to whether these organizations had made themselves illegal was outrageously misinterpreted by the media in Macedonia as demanding the death penalty for members of the Rainbow Party . The thesis of the existence of a language to be designated as Macedonian is viewed by Plevris as completely unacceptable. He himself calls the language spoken in Macedonia “Slavic” and asks why the state finances “organizations that serve Proscopian propaganda”.

In May 2012, Plevris moved to Nea Dimokratia to support Greece's pro-European course. After Dimitris Avramopoulos was appointed EU Commissioner, Plevris succeeded in November 2014 as a member of the Nea Dimokratia in the Greek Parliament.
