Giovanni Capellini

Giovanni Capellini (born August 23, 1833 in La Spezia , † May 28, 1922 in Bologna ) was an Italian geologist and paleontologist.

From 1856 to 1858 he studied in Pisa and the following year he traveled through France, England, Switzerland and Germany. In 1860 he became professor in Genoa and in 1861 professor of geology and palaeontology at the University of Bologna , whose rector he became in 1874. In 1888 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina learned society . Since 1891 he was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1908 he became an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg .

In Bologna he founded the geological institute and the international congress for anthropology and prehistoric archeology.

On December 4, 1890, Capellini was inducted into the Senate of the Kingdom of Italy .
