Kriton Arsenis ( Greek Κρίτων Αρσένης ; born August 3, 1977 in Thessaloniki , Greece ) is a Greek politician ( Panellinio Sosialistiko Kinima ). He has been a member of the European Parliament since the 2009 European elections .

Early life

From 1996 to 2001 Arsenis studied spatial planning and spatial planning at the University of Thessaly . From 2001 to 2003 he completed postgraduate studies in International Development ( MPA / ID) at the Harvard Kennedy School .

Arsenis worked from 2005 to 2009 for the Greek NGO Elliniki Etaireia (Hellenic Society for the Protection of the Environment and the Cultural Heritage) , where he worked for the establishment of the "Sustainable Aegean Program", an awareness campaign for the sustainable development of the Aegean Islands , was responsible.

From January 2008 to May 2009 he was a member of the Greek National Planning Council , where he represented ten Greek environmental associations.

Political career

In June 2009, Kriton Arsenis became a member of the European Parliament in the S&D . After he received the Grand Prize for the “Sustainable Aegean” campaign, he was recruited to PASOK by Giorgos Andrea Papandreou , the then Prime Minister of Greece .

In the European Parliament , Arsenis is a member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and the Committee on Fisheries , as well as an alternate member of the Committee on Development . He is also in the delegation for relations with the Maghreb countries and the Arab Maghreb Union and in the delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean .

He is active in questions of biodiversity and the fight against climate change and was instrumental in the most recent EU regulation on illegal wood. He is also fighting to save bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean .

Activities and awards

From the age of 15, Arsenis has been an active member of the environmental movement in Greece and abroad.

In 1998 he was awarded a prize by the prefecture of Thessaloniki for his contribution to the protection of the old town (Ano Poli) of Thessaloniki.

In 2009 he was awarded the Grand Prize by the European Union and Europa Nostra for the “Sustainable Aegean” campaign in the “Education, Training and Awareness” category.

As part of the climate change awareness effort, Arsenis is coordinating two Greek “turn off the lights” initiatives, for 5 minutes in February 2007 and for 10 minutes in June 2007.

In September 2010 he was named " MEP of the Year 2010" in the Fisheries category, an award given by The Parliament Magazine .

Arsenis was recognized by IFAW for its “excellent work on bluefin tuna and marine research in general, and its whaling efforts with regard to the IWC, as well as the resolution on Iceland's accession to the EU in particular ( sterling work on Bluefin tuna and Marine issues in general, especially on his efforts on whaling in the build up to the IWC and the resolution on Iceland's accession to the EU ) "nominated for an award.
