biography

Papariga comes from a left family. Her parents were already members of the KKE and fought in the resistance against the German occupation. Papariga graduated from the Historical-Archaeological Department of the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Athens . She then worked for eight years in accounting for various companies and at the same time worked as a private teacher. Since 1976 she has worked exclusively in party and social and political functions. Papariga is widowed and has a daughter.

Political career

Papariga took her first political steps in 1961 as a 16-year-old in the Greek peace movement and as a member of the youth movement of the then only legal left party, EDA (United Democratic Left). Before the military dictatorship from 1967 to 1974 she was active in various school and student movements, for example on the board of the school organization and then on the board of the student organization “Democratic Lambrakis Youth”. During the military rule, she joined the illegal KKE and was active in the solidarity movement for political prisoners.

After the end of the military dictatorship she became a member of the presidium of the party committee of the city of Athens (KOA) and was active in the communist women's organization, which she then headed until 1981.

Aleka Papariga was elected to the Central Committee for the first time in 1978 and has been a member of the KKE Politburo since 1986. In February 1991 she was elected General Secretary of the KKE at the 13th party congress - as the first woman, at the same time as the first Greek party leader. She has been re-elected since then, until she announced in April 2013 that she would no longer run for this position. Papariga has been a member of the Greek parliament since the 1993 election as a member of the second Athens constituency.
