The European elections in Luxembourg 2009 took place on June 7, 2009 at the same time as the Luxembourg parliamentary elections. It was carried out in the course of the EU- wide European elections in 2009 , with six of the 736 seats in the European Parliament being awarded in Luxembourg . The election took place according to the proportional representation based on the D'Hondt procedure , whereby the whole country was considered a single constituency . The voters could panaschieren and give preferential votes .

Campaigning parties

The same eight parties took part in the election that ran for the Luxembourg parliamentary elections. Four of them had already won seats in the 2004 European elections . These were the Christian-social CSV (3 seats), the social democratic LSAP (1 seat), the green Déi Gréng (1 seat) and the liberal DP (1 seat). In addition, the national conservative ADR , the left Déi Lénk , the communist KPL and the first-time Biergerlëscht stood for election.

Results

The turnout was 90.8%, the highest of all EU Member States (overall average: 43.1%). However, this is mainly due to compulsory voting, which only existed in Luxembourg and Belgium.

Despite losses, the CSV was clearly able to hold its own as the strongest party. The voting shares of the other parties changed only slightly, the distribution of seats remained unchanged compared to the 2004 European elections .
