The voters were able to give six votes, which they could either give to a list or distribute to individual candidates who may also be on different lists. And wherein two votes per candidate could be awarded .

Starting position
In the 2014 European elections , the parties in the ruling coalition of the liberal DP , the social democratic LSAP and the Greens ( Déi Gréng ) suffered losses. For the first time, however, the Greens were second strongest in a national election.
The Christian Social CSV gained votes and became - as in every European election so far - the strongest party. The former head of government of the CSV Jean-Claude Juncker stood as the European top candidate of the EPP and became President of the European Commission after the election .
As a result, nothing changed in the distribution of seats compared to 2009 . The CSV received three mandates; Greens, LSAP and DP one each.
In the 2018 chamber election , the Bettel-Schneider government was able to just defend its majority in the Chamber of Deputies, with the DP and LSAP losing votes, but the Greens gaining them. The CSV remained the strongest party despite losses. For the first time, the pirate party moved into parliament.
