Chamber election 1954
The 1954 chamber election to determine the members of the Luxembourg Chamber of Deputies took place on May 30, 1954.
Starting position, electoral period
A CSV / LSAP coalition had existed since 1951 . In December 1953 Joseph Bech (CSV), who was Prime Minister from 1926 to 1937, was again Prime Minister in place of the late Pierre Dupong .
Until 1956, the constitution provided for a six-year electoral term and a three-year semi-renewal. Therefore, in the chamber elections in 1948 only in the electoral districts south and east and in the chamber election in 1951 only in the electoral districts center and north. In 1954 the Chamber of Deputies decided to revise some constitutional articles, which legally resulted in the dissolution of the Chamber and a new election throughout the country. By means of a constitutional law of July 27, 1956, the half-renewal of the Chamber was abolished, the electoral term was shortened to five years and, as a transitional provision, the electoral term of the members elected in 1954 was set to 1959. Since 1954, there has been an overall renewal of the Chamber of Deputies with every election.
Suffrage
The seats are distributed proportionally within four constituencies using the D'Hondt procedure .
