The seats are distributed proportionally within four constituencies using the D'Hondt procedure .

* Share of votes taking into account the different numbers of votes per voter in the individual electoral districts

The CSV was able to keep its share of the vote from 1979, while the co-ruling DP lost slightly. The LSAP was able to gain significantly after several consecutive election defeats. The LSAP spin-off SDP , which received two seats in 1979, did not run. The PSI, also a spin-off from the LSAP, lost its only seat. The Greens competed for the first time and received two seats.

Government formation

After the LSAP was elected, it replaced the DP as a coalition partner of the CSV. The new Prime Minister was Jacques Santer (CSV), who replaced Pierre Werner, who was retiring for reasons of age, on July 20, 1984.
