The CSV fell to its worst result since it was founded in 1944, while the co-ruling DP gained significantly, but remained the third strongest party. The SDP, a spin-off from the LSAP, led by former Deputy Prime Minister Henry Cravatte , moved into the Chamber for the first time .

Government formation

Prime Minister Werner resigned from office on the evening of the election after the defeat of the CSV. The new LSAP and DP coalition government took office on June 15, 1974. Gaston Thorn (DP) became the new prime minister , although the LSAP was the stronger party.
