The early election of a chamber in 1959 to determine the members of the Luxembourg Chamber of Deputies took place on February 1, 1959.

Starting position

The CSV / LSAP coalition, which had existed since 1951, was continued after the 1954 chamber election . As Prime Minister, Pierre Frieden replaced Joseph Bech (both CSV) in 1958 . After the chamber passed a resolution against the LSAP ministers in connection with a corruption affair on December 9, 1958, the latter resigned, as did the other members of the government. On December 18, 1958, the chamber was dissolved.

Suffrage

The seats are distributed proportionally within four constituencies using the D'Hondt procedure .

Result

Each voter had as many votes as there were elected representatives in the constituency. The results of the individual constituencies:

The CSV lost significantly, while the DP increased significantly. The socialists and communists remained stable.

Government formation

Prime Minister Pierre Frieden refused the mandate to form a government for health reasons and died on February 23, 1959. The new Prime Minister was Pierre Werner (CSV), whose coalition cabinet consisting of CSV and DP was sworn in on March 2, 1959.
