Operation Fish

Operation Fish was the code name for the evacuation operation of the British Treasury from Great Britain to Canada during World War II . In order to be able to continue the war from the colonies in the event of an invasion of the British Isles , the government of Winston Churchill began to ship the stored assets of the Bank of England to the Scottish port of Greenock .

From there the stocks were loaded onto a light cruiser. The convoy operations were carried out between June 24, 1940 and July 5, 1940. A total of valuables worth 29.7 billion were US dollars (calculated value of 2018) shipped from Britain to Canada. It was the largest historically known relocation of the British treasury.
