At the European level, the party is a member of the party of the European Left and accordingly associated with the GUE / NGL group without having its own MEPs in the European Parliament . She also has observer status in the European anti-capitalist left .

history

The party was founded on January 30, 1999 as an electoral party by the Communist Party of Luxembourg and the New Left , which split from the KPL in 1994, and independents. She took part in the parliamentary elections on June 13, 1999, and with 4.98% of the votes in the southern electoral district, which consists of the cantons of Esch an der Alzette and Capellen , she immediately entered the Luxembourg parliament . In the new elections of the municipal council of the city of Esch an der Alzette on April 30, 2000, the Left achieved their best result with 12.78% and, in André Hoffmann , appointed a deputy mayor for the first time.

After continuing tensions between the KPL and the other supporters of the joint party, Déi Lénk split. The KPL entered the parliamentary elections on June 13, 2004 with its own list, but ultimately both failed.

In the municipal elections on October 9, 2005, the Left in Esch-sur-Alzette achieved a result of 7.96% of the votes cast, which was sufficient for a place in the municipal council of the city. In all other municipal councils they lost their mandate, among other things because of the opposing candidacy of the KPL .

In an open letter in December 2007, the Left offered the KPL a joint candidacy for the 2009 parliamentary elections. However, the KPL refused to do so and planned to run its own open lists for election, which caused a lack of understanding, especially among the left. In the parliamentary elections in 2009, the left surprised by growing in all electoral districts even without an electoral alliance with the KPL. In the south they reached 4.1% (+1.8%). André Hoffmann moved into parliament again on July 8, 2009. He already held a seat in Parliament from July 13, 1999 to June 30, 2000 and from October 9, 1990 to April 14, 1994. As announced, he resigned on November 15, 2011, making way for his successor Serge Urbany .

In the early parliamentary elections on October 20, 2013 déi Lénk was able to gain again in all districts. In the district center with 4.75% (+1.2%) and in the district south 5.73% (+1.7%) it was enough for one seat each. Serge Urbany and Justin Turpel were elected . In April 2015, Justin Turpel resigned from office for health reasons. He was succeeded by David Wagner . On April 21, Marc Baum took over the mandate of Serge Urbany on the basis of the rotation principle.

In the municipal elections on October 9, 2011, déi Lénk almost doubled their share of the vote in the municipalities in which they ran. They achieved 10.89% (two seats) in Esch an der Alzette, 6.45% (two seats) in Luxembourg City , 6.85% (one seat) in Dudelange , 6.63% (one seat) in Sassenheim and in Differdange 5.29% (one seat).

politics

Dei Lenk sees itself as a social, democratic and anti-capitalist movement that works for a more just society. The movement wants a redistribution of wealth, fair access to resources, the fight against discrimination in all its forms, the development of social security, the eradication of poverty, an ecologically sustainable society, participatory democracy and transparency in political decisions. She wants a new social, economic and political model that rejects competition, profit maximization and self-interest. It also wants natural resources to be sustainably preserved as a means of subsistence, as well as a socio-ecological transformation, a fair distribution of the wealth created and an economic order based on solidarity on a national and global level.
