Yeni Kıbrıs Partisi (YKP) (Greek: Κόμμα Νέα Κύπρος, German: New Cyprus Party) is a socialist party in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus .
history
The party was formed in 1989 when a group led by MPs Alpay Durduran and Rasıh Keskiner left the Social Liberation Party, the forerunner of today's Social Democracy Party . 1998 united with a group around the MP and former chairman of the Turkish Republican Party , Özker Özgür. The party was renamed Yurtsever Birlik Hareketi (Patriotic Unity Movement). In 2002 this faction left the party again and founded the United Cyprus Party (BKP). The party then reverted to its original name.
Participation in elections
In the parliamentary elections in 1990, the YKP achieved 0.8 percent. In 1993 it came to 1.2 percent, in 1998 to 2.5 percent. In the presidential elections in 1990 and 1995, her candidate Alpay Durduran won 1.3 and 1.8 percent, respectively; In 2000 Arif Desem got 2.6 percent. Since then, the YKP has not taken part in elections because it considers the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to be illegitimate.
Positions
The YKP calls for a "united and socialist" Cyprus and rejects the presence of Turkish troops in the north and Greek troops on the island , which has been divided since 1974 . The YKP has observer status with the European Left .
Trivia
The weekly newspaper of the anti-nationalist YKP is called Yeniçağ (New Epoch) - just like an extremely nationalist daily newspaper that appears in Turkey .
