Sinistra Ecologia Libertà ( SEL for short , German "Left Ecology Freedom" ) was a left-wing and ecological Italian party founded in 2009 that felt committed to the ideas of democratic socialism . The SEL was merged into the newly founded Sinistra Italiana (SI) on December 17, 2016 .

Sinistra e Libertà electoral alliance

In March 2009, in the run-up to the European elections, the Sinistra e Libertà election alliance was formed , to which the following parties belonged:

Movimento per la Sinistra (MpS, Movement for the Left) around Nichi Vendola
Sinistra Democratica (SD, Democratic Left) around Claudio Fava
Unire la Sinistra (ULS, For the Union of the Left) around Umberto Guidoni
Partito Socialista (Socialist Party)
Federazione dei Verdi (Green)

The Federazione dei Verdi and the Sinistra Democratica had previously belonged to the party alliance La Sinistra - L'Arcobaleno , which failed to make it into both chambers of the Italian parliament in the 2008 parliamentary elections.

With 3.1 percent of the vote, Sinistra e Libertà failed to enter the European Parliament due to the current four percent threshold .

Party formation

On 20 December 2009 the consolidated Movimento per la Sinistra (MpS), the Sinistra Democratica (SD) and Unire la Sinistra (ULS) three of the allies their cooperation and joined together with the Associazione Ecologisti (AE) by Loredana De Petris to a joint new party under the name Sinistra Ecologia Libertà .

For the 2013 parliamentary elections , the party joined the electoral alliance Italia. Bene Comune and moved into both houses of parliament for the first time. Together with Laura Boldrini , she has been the President of the Chamber of Deputies from March 16, 2013 until the new election in March 2018 .
