The Sinistra Democratica (full name: Sinistra Democratica. Per il Socialismo Europeo ; German: Democratic Left. For European Socialism ; Abbreviation: SD) was a small Italian party of the center-left alliance L'Unione , which embraced the ideals of the democratic Felt obliged to socialism . On May 5, 2007 , the founding congress of the Sinistra Democratica (SD) took place in Rome , which elected the Italian research minister Fabio Mussi as its chairman ( Coordinatore politico ). As a result, on May 16, 2007, 12 senators and 21 members of the party formed into independent parliamentary groups. In the European Parliament , the party is represented by 4 MEPs from the Group of the Party of European Socialists (PES).

On October 2, 2007, a group led by Senator Gavino Angius and MPs Franco Grillini , Valdo Spini and Fabio Baratella left the party to support the initiative of Enrico Boselli ( SDI ) to found a new social democratic party , the Partito Socialista (PS) , to follow.

At a congress of the Italian Left and Greens on December 8 and 9, 2007, the SD joined forces with the Partito della Rifondazione Comunista (PRC), the Partito dei Comunisti Italiani (PdCI) and the Federazione dei Verdi (Greens) to form the La Sinistra electoral alliance - L'Arcobaleno (German: Die Linke - Der Regenbogen ) together. However, this list did not win any seats in the 2008 parliamentary elections.

On March 16, 2009, the SD joined the new list connection Sinistra e Libertà for the European elections , but missed the required four percent hurdle with 3.1 percent of the vote. On December 20, 2009, the SD and two of the alliance partners consolidated their cooperation and formed the new Sinistra Ecologia Libertà party .
