Giovanni Claudio Fava (born April 15, 1957 in Catania ) is an Italian politician , journalist and opponent of the Mafia . From 1999 to 2009 he was a member of the European Parliament .

Life

Claudio Fava is the son of the journalist and writer Giuseppe Fava, who was murdered by the Mafia in 1984 . He graduated from law school in 1980 and was qualified as a journalist in 1982 . In this profession he works as a war correspondent in Lebanon , Cambodia , El Salvador and Haiti, among others . He received the “Europe” journalism award for a report on Somalia during the fall of the Siad Barre regime .

He is the author of several specialist books dealing with the mafia. He is also a director and screenwriter for several television and film productions. His first major project was in 1984 directing the TV series "I Siciliani", for which his father had written the beginning of the screenplay.

Claudio Fava wrote the script for the film " 100 Steps ", produced in 2000 , together with Monica Zapelli and Marco Tullio Giordana . The script was awarded the Silver Lion at the Venice International Film Festival in 2000 . As early as 1994 Claudio Fava became known nationwide with the television report "Cinque delitti imperfetti" about unsolved Mafia crimes. In 1998 he received the Solinas Prize for the best script for 100 steps (I cento passi).

Fava participated in 1991 alongside the mayor of Palermo Leoluca Orlando in the founding of the anti-Mafia party La Rete and was elected to the regional assembly of Sicily for this in the same year . From 1992 to 1994 he was a member of the Camera dei deputati (Italian House of Representatives). Fava left La Rete in 1994 and was one of the founders of the small party Italia Democratica . In 1999 he moved to the Democratici di Sinistra (DS; Left Democrats) and then functioned until 2001 as "secretary" (ie chairman) of this party in Sicily. He was also a member of the party executive committee at the national level.

In the 1999 European elections , he was elected to the European Parliament , to which he was a member until 2009. He was a member of the Group of the Party of European Socialists (PES) as well as in the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and in the delegation for relations with the countries of the Andean Community. When the Democratici di Sinistra decided in 2007 to merge with the more center-tending La Margherita party to form the Partito Democratico , Fava founded the Sinistra Democratica (SD; Democratic Left) party with other members of the left wing of the DS . He then headed this as “coordinator” until it merged with other left-wing parties to form Sinistra Ecologia Libertà (SEL) in 2009 . In 2014 Fava left the SEL, in 2017 he joined the Articolo 1 party .
