Yeniçağ ( New Epoch ) is a Turkish daily newspaper with an editorial office in Istanbul . The mottos of the newspaper with the founder of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk , printed on the title head of the newspaper are Türkiye Türklerindir (Turkey belongs to the Turks) and Dünyayı Türkçe okuyun (Read the world in Turkish) . It is considered close to the İyi Parti .
overview
After Devlet Bahçeli took over the chairmanship of the Party of the Nationalist Movement (MHP) in 1997, he pushed ahead with the establishment of a publication to complement the old party newspaper Ortadoğu, which was poorly circulated . At the end of the 1990s, he came to an understanding with the entrepreneur Ahmet Çelik to found a weekly newspaper that was published under the name Kurultay (Congress) . From this emerged in March 2002 the daily newspaper Yeniçağ , which however remained independent of the party. In November 2004, Yeniçağ author İsrafil Kumbasar was attacked after a restaurant in Istanbul. The perpetrators were led by the chairman of the Istanbul Idealist Association , the reason being said to have been Kumbasar's critical comments about the party leader.
In 2010, party leader Bahçeli described the paper as a "fortress of national resistance". But in the following years the newspaper moved away from Bahçeli. The paper continues to be nationalist , but invokes Kemalism more than the current MHP leadership . In 2016, she supported the party-internal challengers of Bahçeli, which included the former Interior Minister Meral Akşener and the Yeniçağ author Ümit Özdağ. Akşener and Özdağ are now politicians of the İyi Parti and, unlike many other media outlets, the newspaper also reports on the party's development on a daily basis.
In December 2016, the editorial office, which was empty at the time, was vandalized by a group of around 30 masked people. The perpetrators could not be identified, but are considered to be AKP supporters.
The well-known Yeniçağ authors also include the journalists Ahmet Takan and Arslan Bulut, the journalist and former CHP MP Esfender Korkmaz, the former MHP MP Özcan Yeniçeri (MHP) and the former Minister of Culture Agah Oktay Güner (MHP, later ANAP ). Also Rauf Denktash , long-time president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (1924-2002) wrote in his later years for Yeniçağ .
Sister leaves
Two other daily newspapers are published by Yeniçağ Gazetecilik: The more intellectual Dokuz Sütun (nine columns) with a sold circulation of 10,274 copies and the tabloid Günboyu (about: Through the whole day ) with a sales circulation of 10,282 copies (as of January 2017).
Trivia
A daily newspaper with the same name appears in Northern Cyprus. This is close to the left-wing New Cyprus party . In contrast to the ultra-nationalist Yeniçağ from Istanbul, the newspaper from Nicosia strictly rejects nationalism and regards the presence of Greek and Turkish troops on the island as an occupation.
