European elections in Croatia 2013
The first European elections in Croatia took place on April 14, 2013 . Subject to the ratification of the accession treaty by the current members of the European Union (see Croatia's accession negotiations with the European Union ), Croatia's accession to the European Union was scheduled for July 1, 2013, which then also took place on that date. From then on, Croatia was represented in the European Parliament by the 12 newly elected members . As a result, the number of members of the European Parliament increased to 766 by the regular European elections in 2014, only to drop to the contractually agreed 751 mandates after the subsequent elections in 2014.
For the first time, a European election took place in a country that was not yet a member of the EU. In previous accession, the by-election to the European Parliament was always held shortly after accession (or not at all in the case of the first EU enlargement in 2004 because of the pan-European elections that were due anyway).
Electoral system
Twelve MPs with a preferential voting system are elected nationwide.
