Eşik ağası

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eşik ağası (Eng. "Threshold Agha ") was the title of high chamberlain among the Aq Qoyunlu , the Safavids and the Qajars . The Eşik ağaları were employed in the Dīwān and in the harem and, according to this area of responsibility, had the titles Eşik ağası başı-yı dîvân-ı a'lâ in the divan and Eşik ağası başı-yı harem in the harem. The şik ağası of the harem was subordinate to that of the divan and accordingly earned less. The Safavids considered the şik ağası to be one of the four pillars ( arkân ) of the state. The living area of the Eşik ağası was called Eşikhâne . The title was first mentioned during the short reign of Shah Ismail II. The Aghas employed in the divan were not only responsible for the entry and exit. They also regulated the procedure and order of the council meeting and had considerable political and financial influence. As a sign of their dignity, they wore a golden mace on official occasions and receptions , stood opposite the ruler and also led ambassadors to him. They showed the gifts they had brought with them. There are also known cases in which the şik ağası himself served as envoy. Kamal al-Din Farrukhzada, who negotiated the peace of Amasya with Sulayman the Magnificent in 1555 , was, for example, the Eşik ağası Tahmasps I.

Under the Qajars, the influence of Eşik ağası was curtailed.
