European elections in Sweden 2009
The European elections in Sweden took place on June 7, 2009. It was part of the European elections taking place across the European Union in 2009 , with Sweden having 18 of 736 members of the European Parliament . According to the Nice Treaty , this was one MEP less than in the previous European elections in 2004 . After the Treaty of Lisbon came into force on December 1, 2009, two more Swedish MEPs were elected to parliament.
Election mode
The elections took place according to proportional representation , with all of Sweden forming a single constituency. As with the elections to the Swedish parliament , there was a 4% threshold clause .
Results
The final result of the election was announced on June 11, 2009 by the Swedish electoral authority Valmyndigheten . As in the 2004 European elections, the strongest party was the Socialdemokraterna, ahead of the conservative Moderaterna , each of which was able to keep its number of seats. The main winners of the election were the green Miljöpartiet and above all the Piratpartiet , which won 7.13% of the vote and a seat in parliament from scratch. In addition to the left-wing Vänsterpartiet , the loser was primarily the Eurosceptic Junilistan , which lost all three parliamentary seats.
The turnout was 45.5%, higher than in the 2004 European elections (37.9%), but significantly lower than in the last election to the Swedish Parliament in 2006 (82.0%).
