Election to the Swedish Parliament in 1970
The election to the Swedish Parliament in 1970 took place on September 20, 1970.
It was the first choice after the introduction of the unicameral system. In addition, from this election the planned length of a legislative period was shortened from four to three years.
Election result
The Social Democrats took office under the leadership of Prime Minister Olof Palme , who had taken over the office in 1969 from Tage Erlander (since 1946). After four elections with gains, the Social Democrats lost votes for the first time. On the one hand, the Center Party was able to benefit from the losses . a. has been traced back to the beginning nuclear power debate. The center made a name for itself with statements critical of nuclear energy. The Liberals also made gains and were able to assert themselves as the third largest party. Under the new name Moderata samlingspartiet , the conservatives achieved their historically worst result with 11.5 percent. The communists won and returned massively strengthened to parliament. The Christian Democrats , on the other hand, were again unable to win any seats.
The Social Democrats lost their absolute majority in parliament and formed a minority government .
