In September 1924 there was an election for the Second Chamber of the Swedish Reichstag .
In 1923 the Liberal Party split. The majority in favor of prohibition (an absolute ban on alcohol) formed the Liberal People's Party. The minority against Prohibition founded the Liberal Party. It was not until 1934 that the two liberal parties were reunited.
There was also a split among the communists. The old Communist Party supported the Communist International , but the newly formed Communist Party did not.
After the election, Prime Minister Ernst Trygger (General Voters' Association), who headed a conservative minority government, was replaced by the Social Democrat Hjalmar Branting .
