Election to the Swedish Parliament in 1928
The election for the Second Chamber of the Swedish Reichstag took place on September 15, 1928 in Gothenburg and a few other cities, on September 21 in Stockholm and in between on September 16 in the rest of the country.
During the election campaign, the social democrats were attacked by the bourgeois parties, particularly because of their proposals for a stricter inheritance tax. They were accused of being close to communism.
The election result resulted in losses for the Social Democratic Party and gains for the General Electoral Union, which achieved the best election result in its party history with 29.4%. Thereupon King Gustav V appointed its chairman Arvid Lindman on October 1, 1928 as prime minister. However, he was only able to form a minority cabinet, as the Liberal Party and the Free People's Party refused to participate in government.
